Former Journey singer Steve Perry’s first album in over two decades has been inspired by the death of a friend.
The rocker, who joined his ex-bandmates for their Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction on Friday night (07Apr17), has revealed he’s putting the finishing touches to his first solo album since 1994’s For The Love Of Strange Medicine, and the tracks are tinged with personal drama.
“I met someone and I fell in love with this person, and I lost this person to breast cancer four years ago,” he tells ABC News. “In the midst of that, I had written some songs, and before I met her, I had sketched some. And so about a year ago, I started recording.
“Basically the record is an emotional expression, and a reason to make one. It’s been a real cathartic experience going back to that emotional place that I thought I would never go back to. And we really have been doing our very best to capture what I think are some timeless songs.”
Perry didn’t join his former bandmates for a performance at the Rock Hall induction gala. He quit the group in 1987.
